Baby Blankets

Seton Northwest Hospital Volunteers make baby blankets for many of the babies born in the hospital. We would like to give every newborn a blanket, but we need more volunteers to make blankets for us to keep up with the demand.

General Information:

New contributors to our Blanket Project are asked to purchase the yarn for their first blanket themselves. The yarn should be acrylic (not wool) and a worsted weight. The Simply Soft from Walmart is the yarn we prefer since it is very soft and launders well. The no dye lot color are important, too. Please NO orange, burnt orange, black, brown, Kelly green, forest green, beige, tan, light brown, purple, red or combination of these colors. Remember, these blankets are for tiny babies.

The finished blankets should be approximately 24 inches wide and 27 inches long. A bit larger is fine, but please no smaller than this. Also, the blanket should NOT have large holes such as those in Granny Squares patterns. If a fingering yarn is used, either a double thread or a small knitting needle or crochet hook is necessary.

When you first blanket is completed please do the following:

  1. Place the blanket in a plastic bag with your name and phone number.
  2. Leave the bag in the Volunteer Office at Seton Northwest, and mark it "attention Pat Lovett".
  3. Either call me at home or email me (contact info listed below) and tell me that your first blanket is finished and in the office.
  4. When you bring in your blanket be sure to fill our one of the record sheets with you name, address, and phone number. Place it in the white three ring binder marked with the first letter of your last name.

I will look at the blanket and call you with any suggestions and arrange to leave yarn for your next blanket in the Volunteer office the next time I am at the hospital . Please remember that the Volunteer office is open Monday through Friday from 8 to 4.

We sew small labels on each blanket, and these labels are in a small metal can on the shelf where the blankets to be given out are located. When you pick up yearn, please take two or three labels and sew them on your completed blankets before turning them into the office.

If you have any question, please do not hesitate to call or email me.
